All About Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Accepted Pembroke Welsh Corgi Colors

Pembroke Welsh Corgis come in a small range of traditional coat colors recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Accepted colors include red, sable, fawn, and black & tan, all of which may appear with or without white markings. White is commonly seen on the legs, chest, neck, neck, muzzle, belly, and as a blaze on the face, but it should not dominate the body.

You may also hear the term tri-color, which refers to black, tan, and white combinations. Pembrokes may be black-headed tris or red-headed tris, both of which are normal and part of the breed standard.

Colors such as merle, blue merle, blue, or other unusual patterns are not found in purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgis. The merle gene exists in the related Cardigan Welsh Corgi, which is a separate breed, so a “merle Pembroke” typically indicates Cardigan ancestry or another breed mixed in the lineage.

Responsible breeders work to preserve the true Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed standard, focusing on health, temperament, and the traditional colors that have defined the breed for generations.
